    Would that also apply to people who are overweight and going to do their first session at the gym? If they are using weights (machines or free) they should not go down the next day but wait at least 48 hours? someone please reply.

      You'll find the information Mike share in this video to be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/SjzJ_rZzZ4A/v-deo.html (starting at 4:55). The workouts, it should be pointed out, are performed for the specific purpose of stimulating muscle growth. The non training or rest days are when the body recovers and adapts (grows) from the workout. Performing regimented "cardio" on your off days will compete for your recovery resources and compromise your progress. If weight loss is your primary goal, then follow Mike's advice in the video I have linked above.

  • @baronmeduse

    I got Mike's Heavy Duty when it first came out, normal 'mail order' all the way to the UK, it's only about 60 pages. I did actually do two blocks of training using the routine outlined in the book, but didn't like doing leg extensions because they hurt my knees. Around the same time I had a couple of pamphlets by Brooks Kubik and Stuart McRobert's book 'Brawn' which was mail order from Cyprus! (McRobert published 'Hardgainer' magazine ad also wrote for Iron Man), which share a bit of overlap with Mentzer's Heavy Duty, but they are bodybuilding/powerlifting crossover. I have to say that Kubik's routine plans got me to a 110Kg (242lbs) bench press in about 18 months. Also stressing the 'basics and brevity' view of not stacking on endless volume and actually training hard. It was only after reading 'Brawn' that I properly started using a training journal. During that time I would drop in 12 week cycles using Mentzer's pre-exhaust system for chest and back. I also used the 'hardgainer' routine he talks about here during lay-offs from powerlifting training. Mentzer is knocked a lot by the 'science based' crowd here in YT, but most of them employ a large number of things he first popularised before they were even born. In the late '90s just before he died Mentzer had a column in Iron Man where he was still developing ideas, it's a shame he went too soon.

      Same question here.

    • @petek4279
      @petek4279 День тому

      Not sure what it is but here's how I've adapted the high intensity principals. Please note, I'm coming from a high volume basis in training. I previously trained 6 days a week, 16 working sets per muscle group. Now I only train every 3rd day. I'd categorize myself at the late beginner/early intermediate stage. Also now I'm in my 40's, and I can lift pretty heavy. Ok let's move on. So let's say we're doing a chest/back day. I usually do 2 chest exercises. 1 pressing motion, Mentzer advised doing inclines on a Smith machine, I personally prefer to use cables currently. So you'd start with a warm-up set about 1/3 of the weight of your final working set. Do about 10 reps. Then you do a potentiation set, usually about 60-65% of your working set, for as many reps as possible (usually in the 15 rep range). Rest about 3 minutes (more or less depending on when you feel ready for your actual working set). Now your working set you're going to use a weight that's approximately 85-90% of your 1 rep max. You're aiming for about 6-8 rep range. You should really be struggling by 7 reps. On your last rep, hold the weight at the peak contracted state for up to 15 seconds. Then lower it as slowly as possible fighting it the whole way until you just can't hold it anymore. That is all out failure. Note: your cadence for all your other reps should be about a 2 concentric movement, 1 second hold at peak contraction, 3-4 second eccentric. All slow controlled deliberate movements. Now for exercise 2 for the chest you're going to do a fly motion. Same cadence as before. You may or may not need the warm-up set here, however since the load on your shoulders is different it couldn't hurt. But if you don't want to, just go right to the potentiation set, then work set. You're done with chest. Then onto your back. You'll want to do a narrow grip palms up pulldown. The same rep scheme as before for chest. Then you'll want to do some sort of rowing motion. Seated cable rows, or bent over dumbbell row, whatever. Now you're done with back. You could call it quits there. I add rear delts to my back days. I usually do reverse flyes with dumbbells, only lifting the weight to about 45° instead of the full motion since I personally feel my traps taking over if I go any higher than that. I added those because I feel they belong with back day, and I had a shoulder injury (rotator cuff) so I want to keep the muscles strong. I hope that helps.

    If you look at the video showing Coe working out with Arthus Jones in April 1983 and compare it with the video where Mike Mentzer trains Coe in July of the same year, there is not that big of a difference in Coe's look or many of the weights used. From what I can gather, Coe started using not to failure workouts around July, so if he transformed himself in 6 months, most of his gains must have come after switching to less frequent all out training.

      Yes, this was Arthur Jones' experiment and training protocol, circa 1983. This wasn't Mike's protocol, as Mike didn't come out with his revised Heavy Duty program until ten years later and was simply there to put Boyer through Arthur's program.
